Attractive reputations are earned through
positive image, positive performance, positive behaviors and positive communication.
A good reputation shows the world that your organization understands how to
become successful. You could have the best product/service in the world, but
without an attractive reputation, your venture will not last long.
Developing an attractive reputation
begins with forging a dominant identity. How well your organization manages
customer and noncustomer relationships within every communication opportunity makes
the difference. Here are a few questions to ask yourself: Does your
organization communicate with realistic integrity and trustworthiness? Are your
products/services truly of the quality you say they are? Has your financial
performance been honorable? Does your workplace environment reflect the same
quality aspects as what you promote in your
products/services? What are employees saying about your organization, and your
products/services? What are your former employees saying? What does your local community
think about your organization, products,
and services? What image are you projecting to your audience about your organization,
products, and services? Is it a true
representation of reality, or is it a false projection?
Often times in business, whether new
or well-established, businesses will
attempt to project an image that is not true and realistic. It is common for
new start-ups to project false images of being much larger and well equipped,
even though they are not. Does this false projection really serve to promote a dominant identity or an attractive reputation?
Most of the time it does not, and what it says right from the start is that
your organization practices deception. Consumers appreciate the truth; they do
not truly care if your organization is a Fortune 500 company or a local
start-up offering the same product. Instead, they care about the truth, and not
falling under deceptive spells. Misrepresenting the true nature of your organization
leaves little room for promoting an effective and attractive reputation.
Deception of any kind is transparent and never forgotten.
Business performance and behaviors
are some of the most obvious and transparent aspects of an organization. Your
product/service quality better be what you say it is, or your reputation will
have much trouble. The size of your organization doesn’t really matter, but, if
your quality is poor, your reputation will be as well. Tell the truth, be
honest, and represent the product/service for what it really is. Unless you
know for sure that your product/service is of the highest quality, because you
designed and built it under the most intense of quality control measures
yourself, do not misrepresent the quality. It is common for competing companies
to sell the exact same products shipped over from China, or the like. Why would
you misrepresent something that was made somewhere else and was never under
your direct control? Tell it for what it is, people appreciate honesty. Honesty
will not stop them from purchasing your products and services, but deception
will, and trust me, consumers are intelligent and they can see right through
deception. Deception in any role has no place in developing an attractive
reputation.
How well your organization
communicates to its audience truly matters. Practicing deception in any area of
the organizational image, performance,
products/service quality, behaviors or communication will damage reputations.
Practice
perfect honesty with customers and nocustomers
to create an attractive and prosperous reputation.
